These microscopes [Patent Pending] were
outfitted with unique solid-state (LED) light sources permitting
fluorescence microscopy at a fraction the cost of microscopes using
standard high-power mercury lamps. One variation fitted with a web-cam,
laptop, and software demonstrated the capability of this device to be
used for manual and automated cell-counting.
There was significant
interest in these pre-production systems from individuals knowledgeable
in the areas of: clinical oncology, cellular and molecular biology,
low-cost CD4; immunofluorescence; cytogenetics; oceanographic; and
educational applications. Fraen anticipates the first production model
to be available for sale this summer.
